Tips

  • Mount the heater away from dust, fumes and flammable materials
  • Use a dedicated socket, not an extension reel
  • Insulate and draught-proof the door

WarmFall in a workshop

WarmFall is a 2000W plug-in wall heater with a ceramic core, adjustable thermostat, remote control, overheat cut-out and 8-hour auto-off. It mounts about 1.8m up the wall with 2 screws and blows warm air down to where you sit.

WarmFall is designed for indoor domestic use. Keep it in a dry space, away from flammable vapours.

Can you use a plug-in heater in a garage workshop?

Only use a heater in a dry indoor space and follow its instructions for the electrical supply, mounting and clearances. A domestic wall heater is not intended for outdoor use or damp conditions. Keep it well away from fuel, solvents, paint, sawdust, workshop dust and anything that could catch fire; do not use it where flammable vapours may be present. Avoid extension reels and use a suitable socket. If the garage is dusty, damp or used for activities that create fumes, check whether the heater is suitable before operating it. When in doubt, do not use a domestic heater in that environment and seek advice from a qualified person.

How much will a workshop heater cost to run?

At 26.32p/kWh, a 2kW heater operating at full power for two hours uses 4kWh and costs about £1.05. This is a worked estimate (4 × 26.32p = 105.28p), not a guaranteed bill amount. Your tariff may differ, and an adjustable thermostat can reduce use by cycling the heater once the room warms. An uninsulated garage may lose heat quickly and keep the heater running for longer. Consider warming the area only while you work, improving draught seals where practical and checking actual usage against your electricity bill. Do not assume a heater will make a large or poorly insulated workspace inexpensive to heat.

What should you check before heating a garage?

Look for moisture, dust, fumes, stored fuels and the location of sockets before choosing a heater. A domestic electric heater should be used only in a dry indoor space and according to its instructions; it is not a solution for a wet garage or a space with flammable vapours. Clear clutter around the proposed position, route the plug lead away from walkways and keep the appliance away from workpieces and materials. Check the condition of the socket and cable. If the garage has persistent damp or electrical concerns, get them addressed before using a heater rather than relying on a household appliance in unsuitable conditions.

Will one heater warm a large garage or workshop?

That depends on floor area, ceiling height, insulation, air leakage and how much of the space you need to use. A 2000W heater is designed for rooms up to 25m² in suitable conditions, not every garage. Large or poorly insulated garages may need more than one heater, and even then may be difficult or costly to keep warm. It can be more practical to heat the occupied work area for limited periods and improve draught-proofing or insulation where suitable. Do not position multiple heaters so their airflow is blocked or they overload sockets; follow each manufacturer's instructions and seek electrical advice if supply capacity is uncertain.

Where should a workshop heater be mounted?

Choose a secure position away from benches crowded with tools, stored materials, dust sources and any flammable liquids or vapours. Keep clear of doors that may strike the unit, and make sure warm air can reach the working area without being blocked. Follow the mounting height and clearance instructions, and use fixings suited to the wall. Plug directly into a suitable wall socket rather than running a lead across the floor. A wall-mounted heater can free up floor space, but mounting it high does not remove the need to keep its outlet and surrounding area clear. Use only in a dry indoor space.

How can you make a cold workshop more comfortable?

Start with the building: draught-proof suitable gaps, improve insulation where practical and keep the door closed while working. Heat only the area and times you need, and use a thermostat instead of leaving a heater at full power. Keep the floor clear and use suitable clothing and task lighting. In a garage, do not compromise ventilation or safety by sealing required vents, and never use a heater around fuel vapours or combustible dust. A heater provides warmth but cannot correct damp or poor building fabric. A large or badly insulated workshop may need more than one heater, so assess its size and heat loss before relying on one appliance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an electric heater in a garage?

Yes, in a dry space with a proper socket, away from flammable liquids and dust.

Can I use a domestic heater in a damp garage?

No: use a domestic plug-in heater only in the dry indoor conditions allowed by its manufacturer. Do not expose it to water, condensation or outdoor weather. Address damp and check the appliance instructions before use.

Can I run a heater near petrol or paint thinner?

Keep heaters away from petrol, solvents, paint and flammable vapours. Do not use a domestic heater where such vapours may be present. Follow safety instructions and store hazardous materials appropriately away from heat sources.

Will one 2kW heater be enough for a double garage?

There is no reliable answer without knowing the room size and heat loss. A 2kW model is intended for rooms up to 25m² in suitable conditions; large or poorly insulated garages may need more than one, and heating may remain challenging.

What is the cost of running a 2kW heater for four hours?

At 26.32p/kWh, four hours at full power uses 8kWh and costs about £2.11. This estimate assumes continuous full-power use; a thermostat, your tariff and actual conditions affect the cost.

Can sawdust affect heater safety?

Dust can be a hazard around electrical and heating equipment. Keep the heater away from dust-producing work and accumulation, do not allow dust to enter or cover it, and follow the manufacturer guidance. If the environment is dusty, check suitability before use.

Should I use an extension reel for a workshop heater?

Use a suitable wall socket and follow the heater's instructions; avoid extension reels and trailing leads where possible. If there is no appropriate socket, have the electrical arrangement assessed rather than improvising with an unsuitable extension.
